In August 2017, an eBay user forked out a whopping $936,000 for a copy of All-Star Comics # 8 with a CGC grade of 9.4. It features the first appearance of Wonder Woman. According to Hypebeast, the vintage collectible from Pristine Comics was the “most expensive female-led comics” ever sold at an online auction.
This happened just a month or so after the widespread success of Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins. While we are at it, did you know that Wonder Woman is also the highest-grossing Superhero Origin Film of all time?
There is no denying the connection between the film’s popularity and the ridiculously high price tag their collectibles command. Raving fans of the movie wanted so much to get a hold of a copy that reveals how Diana Prince got her Amazonian skills. Hence, it’s hardly surprising that Wonder Woman comic book prices shot up like crazy online.
Before you get annoyed and say that the purchase was a complete waste of money, you would be glad to know that the proceeds of the rare Wonder Woman comic issue were donated to Trafficking Hope, a non-profit organization that’s on a mission to eradicate sex trafficking. In the end, it was a victory for the oppressed. The female heroine would be proud.
Guess it’s time to forgo your digital comics and start buying would-be classics. Now you see why it’s a good idea to hold onto your famous comic book copies and keep them in great condition. Who knows, in a decade or two, you could be laughing all the way to the bank.
